Shelly on Emmerdale: A Bit Tied Up Right Now

“I didn’t particularly like being tied to a chair!”

Steph reacts violently when Shelly returns, explains actress Carolyn Pickles

Why do you think Shelly has decided to return to the village to see Turner?
I think she wanted the opportunity to tell her story. She wants to confront Steph, but first of all she wants to talk to Turner.

Does Shelly believe Steph when she says he is too ill for visitors?
She starts to believe her but then Steph goes too far and says he hates you and never wants to see you again. She realises that Steph’s playing the child again and playing the playground games that she has played all her life.

She agrees to go down to the cellar to collect her suitcases, does she have any inclination of Steph’s plans?
No she can’t have had any. Shelly actually demands to go and collect her stuff and one thing leads to another. It’s a split second thing. Steph sees Shelly at the top at the stairs and instinctively pushes her.

What do you think is going through Shelly’s mind when Steph ties her hands and gags her?
Initially she’s trying to stay calm. She’s thinking, ‘where is the exit? Can I get out?’

When she’s tied up and gagged she is fighting for her sanity because very quickly she could lose her cool and lose control. She’s likely to have a panic attack as she’s claustrophobic and is absolutely terrified.

Does she believe that Steph is capable of murder?
I don’t think Shelly believes that Steph is capable of murder, but accidents happen. Steph’s got a very bad temper; she’s deeply paranoid at times and very insecure. I think at one stage Shelly worries that although Steph doesn’t intend to kill her things could go too far and it could happen.

Can Shelly understand why Steph is behaving in this way?
Oh yes, she’s known her for so long. They have such a past together. Shelly does understand Steph and her past and she has lovingly tried to placate Steph at times, seeing that she’s her own worse enemy. But then Steph goes beyond herself and there’s no chance of going with her. It all goes horribly wrong.

What was it like filming in a dark cellar for days at a time?!
I don’t have a problem with confined spaces but to be honest it was incredibly hot and airless. They were exciting scenes to film but it was physically uncomfortable and I didn’t particularly like being tied to a chair or having a gag on my mouth!

The director did ring me to check to see if I was claustrophobic beforehand, and luckily I’m not. I’d already been locked in a cupboard for a scene, so it was the second time I’d filmed in a confined space. It is really great to have the opportunity to play something like this though. We had a wonderful stunt girl and all really wanted to do the storyline justice.
