Chapter Six: Unmasked

"What was that all about?" Drea asked as Anne hung up the phone.

Anne gave her the details "They're all right though?" Drea asked.

"Sure." Anne replied "Jack's mad because they tried to get at him through Sharon. You know what he's like when he's mad."

"Yeah, but what was all that stuff about not quiting?"

"They wanted him to drop the case, that's all."

Drea thought there should be more to it than what Anne was letting on, but she decided not to press the subject. "My air tank should be ready now." she said "We'd better pick in up."

"You go on ahead." Anne said. "I want to get some post cards to send to my grandparents."

"Suit yourself."

The twosome then parted. As Anne was looking over the post card rack in the gift shop, she spotted two women, both blondes who were also in the shop. They wore white cotton shorts and bikini tops, which made Anne remember the previous day. Were they the same ones The figures certainly were familiar. One of them looked straight at her, with a hint of recognition. The two departed, and Anne picked out two cards and paid for them.

After putting her new purchases into her beach bag, Anne set out after the two women. She'd seen the door they had left through and a brief glance showed which direction they were heading. Anne maitained a discreet distance while trailling the pair, walking at a pace that would ensure she could be close enough to notice any change in direction. They came to the bungalows that were a part of the guests' quarters. At one of the first ones, the duo entered. Anne waited breifly, then cautiously approchaed the bungalow. On arrival, she looked around before checking the door. It was unlocked, so she let herself in.

She closed the front door without making a sound. She then took a step and heard the one of her flip-flops slap against the sole of her foot. It wasn't terribly loud, but no sound is welcome when moving around in secret. As she slid of the sandals, she glanced out the sliding doors. The two women, she followed were sunning themselves behind the structure with another woman. All were topless, though apparently none had heard her.

Anne looked around the living room area of the bungalow. Its certainly was a grade above the hut she and Drea were staying in. appeared to be two bedrooms, and the bathroom? It contained a shower stall and hot tub and was seperate from the lavatory.

Anne then crept into the nearest bedroom. It was most likely tha master bedroom, as it contained a double bed. She looked around and was impressed by the satin sheets and crisp linen. What impressed her was the bowl of Andes thin mints beside on the night stand. She couldn't resist taking one and sampling it. Sure beat a solitary one on your pillow. She then noticed a protective case for eyeglasses lying beside the dish. She doubted there would be any glasses inside, perhaps she could get a name off the case. As she picked it she was surprised there still was a pair inside. She slid it out, a pair with dark plastic frames.

Something was wrong, she noted. From her experience with Jack and through noticing glasses more, she knew such frames were passe, especially for somebody with the cash to afford this place. She opened up the arms and inspected the lenses. Sure enough, they were no different than window glass. Also they looked familiar. Her mind raced to put the equation together, and came up with the answer that it could only be Glenda Chafee...

...Who was now standing in the bedroom doorway. "Hello Anne!" she said cheerily "So nice to see you again"

Anne tried to run for it, but was grabbed by Glenda, who then clamped a hand over Anne's mouth. "I don't want to hurt you." she said calmly. "But if you force me, I may have to."

Anne nodded, then was dragged by Glenda toward an armchair her two companions were setting up in the middle of the living room. She mentally cursed herself as she felt Glenda's arm around her bare waist. It had been a trap all along. Once at the chair Glenda let go and Anne sat down. She also got a good look at Glenda. It wasn't the lack of the glasses or that Glenda's light brown hair now cascaded freely beyond her shoulders that Anne found so different. It was the bikini bottom and white tied off blouse were the surprise, reavaling a splendid figure that a model wouldn't mind having.

"I believe introductions are in order." Glenda said. "Anne Thorne, meet Sylvia Nilsson and Ilsa Norquist."

Anne looked the two over. They had each thrown some kind of wrap. Sylvia had short hair and Ilsa long. "I doubt that they're you personal trainer and Swedish massuese." Anne said.

Glenda chuckled "True, but they are with me. Ever hear of the Bikini Bandits?"

"Once or Twice."

"Meet a Charter member. It payed for my Ph.D, and now I maintain a dicreet gem smuggling operation."

"As in some of the Mayan stuff."

"Exactly, but that's not why I tried to warn you and Drea off. Its the fact. I'll have admit, you two are faring very well with our dear old Uncle Jack here to bail you out. Regretably, though your host yesterday didn't see it that way. Does the name Ted Stoneman mean anything to you?"

Anne thought for exactly one second. "Tom Stoneman's brother." she said in a chilled voice. Thomas Stoneman had played Moriarity to Jack's Holmes many years ago, and even met a sticky end in a place with lenient banking laws. Ted had no doubt either taken over or rebuilt his brother's criminal empire and was gunning for revenge.

"I have no wish to be a party to murder." Glenda said. "We never so much as slapped anybody. But I can't take Stoneman's word he will not harm you two."

Sylvia and Ilsa left briefly for one of the bedrooms and returned returned with a cnvas bag. "Here you are, Glenda." Ilsa said.

"Thank you." Glenda said "You two are so helpful, but you need to work on a few things. Like tie ups. Hold her down."

Ilsa and Sylvia then rushed foreward and pinned Anne to the chair. Glenda took some rope from the bag and tied each writst to an arm of the chair. That done, she carfully secured each of Anne's feet to a chair leg. After the second leg was bound, Gelnda ran a hand up one of Anne's legs.

"Nice." she said. "You must use the same stuff I do." She picked up a small plastic bag. "I'm glad I thought of these. Cotton balls." She opened the bag with her teeth and removed about half of the balls. Anne averted her head, then slammed her jaws shut. Glenda took hold of Anne's pony tail and said. "Don't make things more dificult than they already are."

Anne reluctantly opened her mouth and Glenda stuffed in the cotton. Ilsa and Sylvia each handedded Glenda a brightly colored silk scarf. Glenda used one to hold the packing in plce, the other she wound around Anne's eyes. "There" she said calmly "She's completely helpless. She can't kick or cry out, and her hands are in no place to use sharp objects, which she can't see anyway."

"What about the other?" Syvia asked "The same for her?"

"No. Different person, different trap."

Drea picked up her tank with no difficulty and returned to the hut. Anne's abscence worried her and she was about to look into things when the phone rang. "Yes" She said

"Oh, Drea, thank God its you!" came the voice on the other end.

"Doctor Chafee?" Drea said in a puzzeled voice.

"I think Anne might be in trouble."

When it came to Anne and trouble, might was an understatement. Nevertheless, Drea tried to stay calm when she said "How so?"

"I saw a man and two women grab her. I think they spotted me, so I cut out."

"Where are you now?"

"Bungalow Three. And please hurry."

"I'll be right there."

As Drea walked along she started to wonder about the call. Glenda had sounded a bit melodramatic while talking on the phone, and their encounter that morning. Also, Glenda often looked too much like a demure librarian type, and one of Jack's maxims was "If somebody looks or acts too much like something, they usualy aren't". What if Gelnda had casually encountered Anne at the gift shop and somehow lured her to the bungalow? As a result, she approached it cautiously, luking about the vegatation plannted around it to conceal things from prying eyes. she slipped in among the leaves and branches, catching her sarong-stlye skirt once and only briefly. She had a good view of sliding doors and saw a figure seated in a chair. This figure moved but could not get up from the chair. It could only be Anne. As Drea watched, she saw Glenda toward the doors.

I'd better leave, Drea thought. Shed only taken the briefest movement backward, when she saw the two blonde women behind her. "I can explain this.' She said calmy, the realized there were a few thing about this pair she remembered from the previous day. 0

"Drea, you might as well give yourself up." Glenda said " Neither you nor Anne will be harmed if you give come quitly."

Seeing herself outnumbered and trapped, Drea gave in. Once in the room, she called Anne's name. Her companion shot upright, as if rescue was at hand but Glenda said. "Sorry, Anne, but Drea can't help you now." Even as Glenda spoke, Sylvia and Ilsa were setting another chair opposite. the one Anne occupied. "See if you two can't do the same for her." Glenda told her two assistants as she indicated Drea.

Drea was placed in the chair and the two women went to work. They matched their mentor's work perfectly, right down to the gag and blindfold. "Very good." Glenda said.

"Do we get the boat ready?" Sylvia asked.

"We should leave them here until dark." Ilsa advised.

"Go out and get the get boat and have it off the cove." Glenda advised "I'll take them out after dark. Once we're all out on the boat, then we can all enjoy ourselves."

She then stood between the two chairs. "Now maybe we can get their boss down here. She then turned to Anne and said. "I certainly wouldn't mind getting that handsome uncle of yours into some rope."
